Hi there! It's Megs here with a follow-up post to the thrifting post from a few days ago. I did a thrift shop/consignment/salvage run today and came home with a few gems! I was able to find a handful of great shirts and cardigans that will help stretch my current wardrobe and make it new-to-me for Fall, and I was able to score some other massive deals as well! I went with a co-worker, and our first stop was a local salvage company. Now, when you think salvage, you might assume it's a place that sells building salvage materials. This is not always the case. The salvage company I visited today (
Pace's Salvage) purchases lots and overstock from a wide variety of retailers. I am on the weekly email list, and my heart jumped yesterday when I realized they were offering a Breville Juice Fountain (which typically sells for well over $100 new) for around $40! AND they had Ninja blenders reduced from $140 to just $42. I've been juicing several times a day for quite some time, and a new juicer has been on my list (but I didn't want to pay full price). I've also been wanting to try smoothies, but my current blender hasn't worked for some time, so we needed a new one anyway. We arrived early in the morning and I got the only Breville they had...score! They had quite a few ninjas, in case anyone local wants to go for one :) We also found some deals at
Wise Buys (a FANTASTIC thrift store that benefits a wonderful cause!) and
Labels in Bellingham, WA. Note to out of area readers: while these stores may not be available in your area, chances are you have something similar nearby! Do a quick internet search and you may be surprised at the secondhand retail goodies that are just around your corner :)
*Attention Seedlings! Often, consignment stores, thrift stores, and salvage stores are "final sale," meaning you can't return merchandise after you have purchased it. A few things to keep in mind when buying from a "Final Sale" retail location:
- Make sure the appliances have been tested and that they do, in fact, work.
- Don't be afraid of a beat up box! Often a store return or damaged box is the same quality product as the shiny one on the shelf at your local warehouse store.
- Try things on. Even if you are trying on over your own clothes with no mirror, you need to make sure that clothing fits, or you have just made a $ donation to your local thrift store, as you will never wear the garment.
- Bring a friend who will be honest with you. It is easy to get caught up in the excitement of a deal, and someone who can say, "It's not your color" can be very helpful at keeping your budget intact.
- Get on the email list! Often stores will send out weekly or monthly sales/deals that are only for email members. Often the biggest savings are in these sale flyers.
- Get there early! Often with salvaged items, there may only be one or two items. To get yours, make sure you are an early bird :)
